Making an image look low quality is different from accidentally ruining it. A useful result should look compressed, pixelated, old, or repeatedly reposted while keeping the subject recognizable. The most reliable method is to combine smaller dimensions with one or two visible artifacts instead of pushing every setting to its limit.

Start with the reason for lowering quality
Different goals need different damage:
- A tiny 144p look: reduce the height and add moderate compression.
- A reposted meme look: use strong JPEG compression, contrast, saturation, and noise.
- An old-screen look: add scanlines, color drift, and faded color.
- A security-camera look: use grayscale, high contrast, noise, and restrained sharpness.
- A smaller download: reduce dimensions first, then choose JPEG or WebP.
If you only want a smaller file, avoid adding noise. Noise creates detail that an encoder must preserve and can work against file-size reduction.
A dependable low-quality image workflow

- Reduce the target height to 360 pixels or less.

The 144p preset uses a maximum height of 144 pixels and a low image-quality target. Deep Fried is more aggressive: it combines compression with stronger saturation, contrast, brightness, noise, and sharpening.
Resolution usually matters more than the quality slider
An image can keep clean edges at a low JPEG quality if its dimensions remain very large. Conversely, a 144-pixel-tall image will look unmistakably low resolution even when encoded carefully.
Dimensions determine how many pixels are available. Compression decides how much information the encoder discards inside those pixels. Pixelation groups nearby pixels into larger blocks. These controls can produce similar first impressions, but they create different artifacts.
For predictable degradation, lower the dimensions first. Then use compression and effects to shape the look.
JPEG, WebP, or PNG?
JPEG is useful when you want familiar blockiness, ringing, and smeared detail. WebP can also use lossy quality controls and often creates a cleaner result at a comparable size. PNG is lossless, so a quality slider does not make it look worse. To degrade a PNG, reduce its dimensions or apply pixelation, noise, scanlines, or color shift.
JPEG cannot preserve transparency. Transparent areas must be flattened, so choose WebP or PNG if you need an alpha channel.
Keep deliberate damage reversible
The downloaded result is a new file, but intentional quality loss cannot be reconstructed later. Keep the source image and avoid repeatedly processing the already degraded output unless repeated-generation artifacts are part of the goal.
