A CCTV-style image should feel functional rather than cinematic. Security-camera stills often have limited color, harsh contrast, modest detail, sensor noise, and display artifacts. The strongest cue is usually the combination of grayscale and imperfect capture, not a single filter.

Start with the CCTV preset

The CCTV preset in the Low Quality Image Maker turns the image grayscale, raises contrast, lowers brightness, adds noise and scanlines, and applies restrained sharpening. These values produce a useful baseline while keeping faces and objects identifiable.

Adjust for the source photo

Bright outdoor photos may need less contrast because highlights can clip quickly. Dark indoor photos may need more brightness before degradation so important shapes do not disappear. Fine patterns, fences, and text can become noisy after sharpening and scanlines are combined.

Try these corrections:

  • reduce noise when faces break apart;
  • reduce scanlines when small text flickers visually;
  • lower sharpening when edges become white or brittle;
  • use a smaller target size for a distant-camera feel; and
  • keep the source aspect ratio instead of stretching it.

Add overlays carefully

Dates, camera labels, and framing marks are common CCTV conventions, but they should be added only when they serve the project. CCTV versus VHS

Worked example: a dark entrance

For a dim entrance photo, process the CCTV preset unchanged first. If the person becomes a black silhouette, restore brightness before reducing contrast. If the face returns but railings and text develop brittle white edges, lower sharpening. Add more noise only after the important objects remain identifiable.

This order matters because sharpening cannot recover detail removed by low resolution, and extra noise cannot restore shadows lost to an overly dark treatment. Judge the exported image at its final display size, then open the downloaded file outside the editor to check dimensions and format.
