144p Images Explained: Resolution Settings for a Pixelated Look

The label 144p comes from video, where it usually describes a frame that is 144 pixels high. Applied to a still image, it is a useful shorthand for a very small, visibly degraded result. The width is not fixed because it depends on the source aspect ratio.
A 16:9 image constrained to 144 pixels high is approximately 256 by 144. A square image becomes 144 by 144. A portrait image can be narrower than 144 pixels while keeping its original proportions.
144p vs 180p, 240p, 360p, and 480p
The widths below are approximate for a 16:9 image. Other aspect ratios produce different widths.

Choose 144p when obvious degradation matters more than detail. Move to 180p if the main subject becomes unreadable, or to 240p if faces or short captions lose their shape. Start around 360p for complex screenshots or longer subtitles. Use 480p when you want a softer low-quality effect without removing as much detail.
Only 144p is a dedicated image preset in the tool. To use 180p, 240p, 360p, or 480p, open Custom controls and enter the desired value in Height. These heights are manual settings, not additional presets.
Why 144p looks different from simple JPEG compression
JPEG compression removes detail inside the existing pixel grid. A 144p reduction removes most of the grid itself. Fine hair, texture, small text, and distant objects have fewer pixels available, so their shape changes even before additional compression is applied.
This makes resolution reduction a strong first step when the goal is obvious low quality. Compression, noise, and color effects can then decide whether the result feels like a tiny thumbnail, an old upload, or a meme.
Settings for a readable 144p image
Open the Low Quality Image Maker and select the 144p preset. It constrains image height to 144 pixels and applies a low quality target. Process once and inspect the completed result before adding more effects.
If the subject becomes unreadable:
- increase the target height to 180 or 240 pixels;
- reduce pixelation strength;
- keep noise low, especially around text;
- avoid heavy chromatic shift on small faces; and
- use WebP or a slightly higher JPEG quality.
If the result still looks too clean, add moderate pixelation or process a copy again. Repeated scaling and encoding produce a different look from one extremely destructive pass.
Aspect ratio and exact dimensions
The tool keeps the image inside the requested width and height bounds rather than stretching it. The completed output reports the dimensions that were actually produced. Use those reported dimensions when a platform or project has an exact size requirement.
Do not crop merely to force a 256 by 144 frame unless cropping is part of the composition. Preserving aspect ratio avoids distorted faces and text.
144p versus pixel art
A small image is not automatically pixel art. Pixel art uses deliberate shapes, palettes, and edge decisions. A downscaled photo usually contains accidental blocks and blended details. Increasing pixelation can emphasize those blocks, but it does not redesign the image as hand-made pixel art.
For intentionally rough results, that distinction is useful. A 144p photo communicates weak bandwidth or repeated reposting; pixel art communicates a designed visual language.
File size is not guaranteed
Fewer pixels often produce a smaller file, but noise, transparency, output format, and image complexity still matter. Judge the appearance first and check the downloaded file afterward rather than assuming that 144p guarantees a specific number of kilobytes.
