A low quality meme succeeds when the damage adds humor without destroying the setup or punchline. The image can be tiny, over-compressed, noisy, or aggressively colored, but the caption still needs to be understood at a glance.

Start with a readable source

Low-quality processing cannot recover a subject that was already unreadable. Begin with enough contrast between the subject and background so later compression has room to work.

Write the caption before adding damage

Keep the punchline readable

Check the result at the size where people will actually see it. A caption that is readable in a large editor preview may disappear in a messaging app thumbnail.

If the caption is weak:

  • increase font size;
  • increase outline width slightly;
  • reduce noise and chromatic shift;
  • use a less extreme target resolution; or
  • shorten the caption.

If the image is too clean, lower dimensions before adding more noise. Pixel count produces a more convincing low-quality baseline than covering a high-resolution image with random grain.

Avoid accidental misinformation

Compression and captions can change context. Do not use intentional degradation to disguise harmful edits, impersonate evidence, or remove information that viewers need to understand the source. A cursed aesthetic is not a substitute for honest context.
