How to Make a GIF Smaller by Reducing Frames, Colors and Dimensions

GIF file size is influenced by dimensions, frame count, palette complexity, motion, and how similar consecutive frames are. No single setting guarantees a target number of kilobytes, but three controls usually provide the most leverage: dimensions, frame rate, and color count.
Reduce dimensions first
Each frame contains a pixel grid. Cutting width and height reduces the amount of frame data the encoder must represent. Choose the smallest dimensions that preserve the subject and caption.
Lower frame rate carefully
Removing frames can reduce work and size, but it also changes timing. Reaction GIFs often depend on a short gesture or facial change. Watch the complete loop after processing and raise frame rate if the punchline disappears.
Limit colors
Fewer colors can simplify the palette and create visible banding. Flat graphics tolerate low color counts better than photography, gradients, or skin tones.
