Early internet GIFs were shaped by small screens, slow connections, limited tools, and indexed color. The recognizable style combines tiny dimensions, a restricted palette, simple motion, and visible pixels.

Begin with structure

Use a short loop with a clear subject. Reduce dimensions to 144 or 240 pixels high, lower frame rate, and limit colors. These structural changes are more convincing than placing a retro overlay on a full-resolution animation.

Add effects sparingly

Pixelation can strengthen the blocky look. Scanlines and chromatic shift suggest an old display, but too much drift can make a tiny GIF unreadable. Noise may look authentic while increasing encoding complexity.

Choose a preset

The 144p preset is the direct early-web starting point. VHS adds faded color, scanlines, noise, and channel drift. CCTV creates a grayscale, low-frame-rate surveillance style. Process each as a separate experiment instead of stacking every preset idea together.

These are requested targets. A browser may normalize timing, and the result can still vary with the source frames and encoder.

Worked example: reduce a reaction loop

Suppose the source is a 640 by 480 reaction GIF with smooth motion and a detailed background. Start at 240 pixels high rather than 144 so the face remains readable. Process once at 12 fps and 64 colors. If the loop still looks modern, lower it to 10 fps and 32 colors before adding pixelation.

Watch the complete loop after every structural change. If the expression that carries the joke disappears, restore frame rate before increasing resolution. If the face turns into flat patches, restore colors before removing the intentionally blocky dimensions. This order identifies the setting that caused the failure.

Keep the result usable

An early-web look should not require a broken file. Confirm that the generated GIF starts promptly, repeats as expected, preserves the important timing, and downloads with a .gif extension. Test the downloaded copy outside the editor because a working preview alone does not prove that the saved file is useful.

File size is a separate goal. Noise and changing scanlines can make neighboring frames less similar, so a rougher-looking GIF may become larger. If size matters more than style, prefer smaller dimensions, fewer retained frames, and a controlled palette before adding decorative damage.
